Paris Peace Forum 2021
For the fourth consecutive year, the Paris Peace Forum gathered the most important actors in global governance for a unique hybrid edition from 11 to 13 November. Dozens of heads of state and government and representatives of international organizations met in person at the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, while more than 15,000 participants from around the world were able to connect via the Forum’s digital platform. In the wake of the G20 summit in Rome and the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, a key focus of the Forum was to address the multidimensional effects of Covid-19 crisis.
Our contribution
As an active founding member of the Paris Peace Forum, we designed and conducted a foresight workshop on the global governance of Artificial Intelligence. This interactive exercise offered participants a unique way to think about the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence and develop innovative solutions to improve its governance.
A group of 60 experts from around the world and from a variety of sectors, including government, business, academia, and civil society were invited took part in the workshop. Results of the exercise were presented in a public session of the Paris Peace Forum.
Conclusions and policy recommendations from the foresight workshop will be published in a scrollytelling website in autumn 2022.
In addition, we were actively involved in two debates:
A panel entitled “In charge: empowering women in public decision-making processes”, chaired by our Programme Director Ronja Scheler. Among the speakers was Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova.
A conversation on “Financing the ecological and social transition: how to reform capitalism?” with Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Jeffrey Sachs, Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, among others, moderated by our Executive Director International Affairs Nora Müller.

The #SolutionsforPeace of the fourth edition
As every year, project leaders were able to apply to present their initiatives for strengthening global governance at the Forum. The 80 #SolutionsforPeace chosen by the Selection Committee tackle issues that were at the heart of this edition:
- Fighting against the Covid-19 crisis
- Better governing the global commons
- Better governing the digital world
- Protecting the civic space in times of Covid-19
- Achieving equality between men and women
- Strengthening South-South cooperation
- Reforming capitalism through the impact economy
- Fighting fake news and threats to the press
In addition, the Paris Peace Forum Scale-Up Committee will support the development of the ten most promising projects throughout 2022.
