Historical Thinking, Future Strategies: Democracy in a New Geopolitical Era
Authoritarian regimes are increasingly establishing themselves as counterweights to the Western liberal world order. The growing assertiveness of countries in the so-called Global South is redefining the global order and challenges the geopolitical hegemony of the West.
How can democracies respond to the need to redefine their geopolitical strategies in light of their own values? When did the rules-based order begin to crack – not only from the perspective of the West, but also from that of other states? What have been the turning points since 1989, and what can we learn from them?
The e-paper compiles analyses by renowned experts in history and politics on the former Soviet Union, India, African states and the Non-Aligned Movement. They illustrate how different perspectives can contribute to a better understanding of complex historical contexts and thus help to assess current geopolitical realities.
