Bringing the issue of exile onto the theatre stage, facilitating a broader public access to innovative artistic formats is the goal of the project Exile Today – Residencies for Artistic Production. Since 2021, together with the cultural forum Kampnagel Hamburg we have been awarding residencies for theatre, performance or dance projects that focus on the issue of exile.

Experiences of political repression, resistance, persecution, expulsion and of the arrival in a new country, the preoccupation with identity and affiliation in exile as well as thoughts on the theoretical and political significance of exile in society are to be given space and to be discussed. At the same time, the aim is to develop an innovative artistic language of form.

The project lasts for three years and funding conditions will be announced annually. In 2021, 2022 and 2023 and in cooperation with Kampnagel we will invite three projects to Hamburg for one to six week residencies. The final stage productions will be shown a Hamburg. Workshop talks will provide the audience insights into the residency’s working and rehearsal process.
