“Even today, I think, when you talk to people about Italy and even people who describe themselves as pro-European and progressive, there’s still a lot of this notion of “they have to pay for their sins” which is particularly ironic given that Italy has been running a primary surplus for longer than Germany. So you really see how its become a debate that’s been a bit removed from reality and has become very political, very emotional.”
