Immanuel Bloch – Winner of the Körber European Science Prize 2013

On 6 September 2013, the German physicist Prof. Dr. Immanuel Bloch received the Körber European Science Prize for his pioneering work in the field of quantum simulation with ultracold atoms. Bloch generates a microscopic “light crystal” from laser beams in whose “optical lattices” ultracold atoms are trapped. The insights from his research could help in the future to develop materials with tailored properties, such as new superconductors that can conduct electricity without loss.
