History and the Search for Radical Hope
What can history teach us about tackling today’s challenges? Social Philosopher Roman Krznaric explores unexpected inspiration from a thousand years of human history. In conversation with Katja Fausser, he discusses new pathways to radical hope in the face of today’s fundamental challenges.
Roman Krznaric, Social Philosopher and Cultural Historian from the University of Oxford, is a captivating storyteller who fearlessly confronts the big questions of our time. He explores what unexpected insights we can draw from the past thousand years to address some of the fundamental challenges of our era – from the climate crisis to the rise of authoritarianism.
Drawing on examples from Europe and beyond, Roman Krznaric argues that the past is a source of radical hope, inspiring us to rethink democracy, expand cultural tolerance and harness the power of social movements to effect systemic change.
The past, Krznaric suggests, helps us to understand the variety of ways human civilisations have attempted to solve the most pressing challenges of political, economic and social life. Ignoring this potential is reckless and endangers our ability to thrive in the future.
Moderated by Katja Fausser, Körber-Stiftung.
