“The fact that democracy today is not a secure commodity, that it is hostile, under serious threat from within and without, that it has once again become a problem, is something that America also feels”, emphasised Thomas Mann in 1938 on his lecture tour through the USA – a startlingly topical finding. The lecture by Mann researcher Friedhelm Marx describes Thomas Mann’s political and private life in American exile, in particular his time in Los Angeles, which became the centre of European exile in the 1940s.
