Game of life: Stefan Zweig's "Chess novella"

In 1942, the Jewish writer Stefan Zweig, born in Vienna in 1881, took his own life in exile in Brazil. The “Schachnovelle” was his last work. It centres on a Viennese lawyer who is arrested by the National Socialists and secretly learns to play chess during months of isolation. He masters it masterfully, but his psyche is deeply damaged by his imprisonment. Bonn actress Barbara Teuber reads the famous story.
