Trade wars, crises, climate change - the world is becoming more complex. Strong international partnerships are more important than ever. Germany and India have intensified their relations in recent years. Can they work together to develop solutions to these global uncertainties? A discussion as part of India Week Hamburg.

India has long been on Germany’s foreign policy radar. For nearly 25 years, the two countries have shared a strategic partnership. Today, India is not only the world’s most populous country but also an increasingly central player in global affairs. As geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, and economic uncertainties shape the international landscape, strong bilateral partnerships—such as the one between Germany and India—are more important than ever.

With Indias ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, it is focusing on technological innovation, economic growth, and an independent foreign policy. At the same time, Germany and the EU are deepening their cooperation with India in key areas such as trade, digitalization, climate policy, and security. But how can both countries work together to foster stability in an increasingly fragmented world? What does India’s rise as a global power mean for its economic and political ties with Germany? And can their collaboration serve as a stabilizing force in today’s volatile global order?

These and other pressing questions will be explored in a discussion with politician Priyanka Chaturvedi, analyst Ambika Vishwanatha and Erik Kurzweil from the Federal Foreign Office as part of India Week Hamburg, moderated by Julia Ganter, Körber-Stiftung.

  • Priyanka Chaturvedi is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. She is the Deputy Leader and National Spokesperson of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). She has been a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology since 2024 and of the Consultative Committee on External Affairs since 2020. She is a regular on television channels debating on various issues in Indian politics.

  • Erik Kurzweil has been Ambassador and Director for Indo-Pacific Policy, South Asia and Afghanistan at the Federal Foreign Office since January 2023. After studying in Berlin and Paris, he joined the diplomatic service in 1999. He has worked in Bucharest, New Delhi, Washington and Kabul, among other places, and headed the Crisis Response Centre in Berlin. From 2019 to 2022, he was responsible for international relations at the Saxon State Chancellery.

  • Ambika Vishwanath is the Founder and Director of the Kubernein Initiative, an Indian policy advisory and research think tank. Her work primarily focuses on domestic and international water security and its intersection with climate change, urban transformation, and foreign policy. She is also currently a DFAT Maitri Principal Research Fellow at La Trobe University, developing climate and security partnerships between India and Australia.

  • Julia Ganter is Programme Director International Affairs at Körber-Stiftung, where she is responsible for the foundation's regional focus on Asia, the annual foreign policy publication and survey "The Berlin Pulse" and the recently initiated Körber Emerging Middle Powers Initiative.
